Expect Success - Part 3
How do I show I'm expecting success?
Expecting success means envisioning what your company will look like when it is successful. It means taking actions now to confirm your belief that the company will succeed. For example, how did you name your business? Did you choose a name that indicates the business will only ever have one employee - you? Did you use something like "Bill Owens Consulting" or did you add "and Associates" or some other indicator that one day the business will have a large staff?
Where is your company located? Is there any room for growth? Obviously, you don't want to waste a lot of money on huge office or warehouse space when you don't need it yet, but you do want to have a plan for future growth. Choose a location that allows for future expansion of your space, either upward or outward.
There are things you can do at little or no cost that reflect your intention to succeed. For example, when you purchase your office phone, it doesn't cost a lot more to buy a multi-line phone than a single-line phone. Even if you don't hook up the other lines yet, why not have the hardware available to expand when the time comes?
Start a file of things you want to do when you are successful. For example, if your 25th wedding anniversary is coming up in 4 years, where would you like to be able to take your spouse? Make a plan that includes how you will pay for the trip based on the success of your business. If you want to be successful enough to wear a Rolex to your high school reunion, write that goal down and keep it where you can see it daily. If your business goal is to be well-thought of enough to be asked to speak at a conference and actually get paid for it, write that on your list as well. Don't think of these things as "What I would do if...", but rather "What I will do when..."
